A Great Marketing Lesson from Game of Thrones

I’ve started re-watching Game of Thrones beginning with Season 1.

If you’re a fan of GOT, you know that the series is an emotional roller-coaster, where no character – no matter how popular – is safe. In fact, Game of Thrones is notorious for killing off fan favorites (sorry, Ned Stark).

But, it also rewards viewers when really evil characters meet their end in the cruelest ways (looking at you, Ramsay Bolton).

So what does that teach us about marketing? The most effective marketing messages appeal to our base human emotions, and the best marketers and advertisers know this. Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding episode really shocked viewers, but it also generated the most buzz around any show I can ever remember.

Think of the power of harnessing emotion in your MSP marketing messaging – of course I don’t mean in the same way that GOT does, but rather creating messaging that generates an emotional response from your target audience, either by elevating their fear of risk, or promoting a great business benefit that they would feel really good about.

Maybe I’m geeking out on this a bit…

But when you’re as immersed as I am into marketing and lead generation you just start seeing these little lessons everywhere… even in popular shows.

I cover marketing, lead generation and appointment setting a lot more in my 12 Course MSP Mastered® Masterclass for Business Transformation.
